3’s a Crowd

3

Well, it’s been a while since I had my hand forcibly removed.

And in full view of the wife. Oh the shame.

So it’s 2am on a Friday night and the three of us are sat up in bed.

Lyra’s been grizzly for a couple of days – ill (again), overlaid with teething. Sleep’s been majorly affected.

Eventually Jade settles our poorly infant, and Lyra’s quietly feeding with her eyes shut.

I smile tiredly at my wife and reach out to squeeze her hand in support.

And I kid you not, this happened.

Without opening her eyes
and facing away from me,

Lyra reached behind her, and removed my hand.

Then went back to feeding.

Stunned silence.

“Did she just take my hand off yours?” I had to check in on reality.

“Uh huh” said she.

“OK. Just checking.”

There’s no takeaway or learning from this.

Other than that babies are a recurring reminder

that it’s the simple things in life

that are the most inexplicably beautiful.
