My drug dealer knew. many founders and CEO’s don’t until too late

The only thing more addictive than coke is…

The money you make from selling coke.

That’s why so many get back into the game as soon as they’re out of prison.

Kahneman & Deaton famously said beyond $75k per year, emotional being and life satisfaction aren’t really improved.

(more recent surveys cite $96k as the level at which Americans think they will be happy)

David Senra (Founders Podcast) studies history’s greatest thinkers and achievers:

“Every single person I’ve studied, they have all over optimized their professional life at the detriment of their personal life by far.”

With one exception: Ed Thorp.

Ed identified a handful of things that were really important to him:
– I want to get wealthy but also…
– have work that’s intellectually stimulating
– be a good father
– be a good husband
– take care of my health
– to have fun. I want to treat life like the adventure it is.

and prioritised accordingly.

Ingvar Kamprad (founder of Ikea)

“I sacrificed the relationship with my three sons.

I missed my three sons growing up to build Ikea. Don’t do this.

Childhood does not allow itself to be reconquered.”

Larry H. Miller:

“If I could do it all over again I wouldn’t have missed my my kids growing up and I would have had fun.

What is the point of living in a 30 000 square foot house and owning an NBA team, and you don’t even have fun?”

Don’t strive to be rich. Strive to be rich enough.

Props to Matt Matros for the screenshot below.

Note for law enforcement:
My dealer at college. I bought weed from him. Don’t have his number anymore. Also, statute of limitations (27 years ago but the lesson stuck).
