Why does some music sound sad?

I found out last week (after >3 decades of playing the piano) and it blew my mind.

A chord is when two or more notes are played together.

A “major chord” is formed by the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of a scale. It sounds bright and happy.

Lower the 3rd note very slightly, the major becomes a “minor chord”. This sounds sad.

Got it? That was painless, eh?

According to Jacob Collier (six-time Grammy winner and musical genius):

Play any note, and you hear additional faint sounds called overtones (multiples of the frequency of the base note).

These overtones in and of themselves form a major chord.

This is why major chords feel familiar and uplifting; they mirror the natural structure of the base note.

Minor chords are the exact opposite in physics to what a major chord is.

That’s why they sound inherently sadder.

Amazing, right?

Many experts argue that the emotions aroused by chords are explained by…

– emotional associations
– different cultural contexts
– how our brains process sound differently

…rather than through physics.

I was aware of these viewpoints.

Yet when I heard Jacob on Youtube (not known as a hotbed of peer reviewed academia) I accepted it as fact.

Why? Because I’m bought into his personal brand.

The more your audience is attuned (pun intended, sorry) to your personal brand, the more readily they accept your content.

Otherwise, to convince them of anything (in the age of fake news) is an uphill struggle against doubt and scepticism.

If you’re in the business of persuading people, your personal brand is the best investment you can make.
